Renewed VR-support to SwedPop

Renewed support from the Swedish Research Council 2023-2026

Recently the Swedish Research Council announced that SwedPop was one of the research infrastructures that received renewed support within the call Research infrastructure of national interest. The grant of SEK 29,234,000 to SwedPop for the period 2023-2026 is happy news for the project and a confirmation of good work.

– It is very gratifying and a proof of that our work within the project holds a quality that comes out well in fierce national competition, says Elisabeth Engberg, director of CEDAR.

This grant will enable us to further develop and finish the work that has be ongoing since 2018, building a researchinfrastructure of international relevance, increasing, and improving effective access to the unique and detailed Swedish population data for research.

Within the new project the data collection that started in 2018 will be finalized, also including improved access to individual-level income data in the longitudinal databases and an update of mortality data with cause of death, for the pandemic years 1917-1920. The data extraction tool will be updated with additional output formats, and there will be increased emphasis on advanced user support and training.

First release of SwedPop data

Today we are happy to announce the first release of SwedPop data.

We are launching a beta version of the SwedPop data extraction tool where harmonized historical population data for analysis can be downloaded free of charge. The first data release includes data from the Demographic Data Base (DDB), Umeå University, the Scanian Economic Demographic Database (SEDD), Lund University and the SweCens database at the Swedish National Archives. The first release of SwedPop data comprises full count data from >70 Swedish parishes in four large regions until 1908 (DDB), five parishes in Scania until 1910 (SEDD) and the full count 1880 national census (SweCens). Click “Select and extract data” to browse and select your datasets.

Launch of the new website for SwedPop

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the new website for SwedPop – Swedish Historical Population Databases for Research.

The aim of SwedPop is to increase the accessibility of historical individual-level population data from the rich Swedish registers. At swedpop.se you can find information about the SwedPop data, along with metadata and documentation. Shortly you will also be able to download SwedPop-data for research. Our intention is that swedpop.se will become a well-working node in Swedish historical population research, serving as a gateway to data access, comprehensive documentation, user support and training.
